The Dynastic Imagination. Family and Modernity in Nineteenth-Century Germany Adrian Daub’s The Dynastic Imagination offers an unexpected account of modern German intellectual history through frameworks of family and kinship. Modernity aimed to brush off dynastic, hierarchical authority and to make society anew through the mechanisms of marriage, siblinghood, and love. It was, in other words, centered on the nuclear family. But as Daub shows, the dynastic imagination persisted, in time emerging as a critical stance by which the nuclear family’s conservatism and temporal limits could be exposed. Focusing on the complex interaction between dynasties and national identity-formation in Germany, Daub shows how a lingering preoccupation with dynastic modes of explanation, legitimation, and organization suffused German literature and culture.
Daub builds this conception of dynasty in a syncretic study of literature, sciences, and the history of ideas, engaging with remnants of dynastic ideology in the work of Richard Wagner, Émile Zola, and Stefan George, and in the work of early feminists and pioneering psychoanalysts. Collocations as a language resource: a functional and cognitive study in English phraseology Are collocations problems or solutions to problems? If you take the perspective of the foreign learner, as in traditional phraseology, they are certainly challenging, and they have therefore been categorized as arbitrary, or even defective, deviations from an assumed norm of full compositionality. This is a paradox because their ubiquity in language and their importance for language proficiency are undisputed. The book provides a critical review of the traditional phraseological approach to collocations with its classical categories and its roots in structural and generative linguistics as well as traditional Russian phraseology. Instead, it proposes a theory of collocations as an independent functional domain, no longer characterized as “odd comings-together of words” that are neither fully compositional nor fully idiomatic. Russian Notions of Power and State in a European Perspective, 1462–1725: Assessing the Significance of Peter’s Reign This book highlights the main features and trends of Russian “political” thought in an era when sovereignty, state, and politics, as understood in Western Christendom, were non-existent in Russia, or were only beginning to be articulated. The middle voice and connected constructions in Ibero-Romance. A variationist and dialectal account The reflexive constructions that are the focus of this book are the constructions broadly described with the term “middle”: i.e., those that can appear in all persons, and in which the reflexive marker (RM) cannot be understood as a full referential pronoun. One goal of this study is to provide a corpus-based typology of middle and related uses that allow us to compare the behaviour of the RM in these constructions with previous typological accounts, where competing models (based either on changes of diathesis or on the semantics of the verbal event) can be found. A second goal is to shed light on the evolution of the different functions of the RM, by exploring the factors that affect its productivity, with a specific focus on those verbs where reflexive marking is most variable, that is, anticausative verbs and verbs with no change of valency. These reflexive constructions show a notable difference in productivity in Spanish and Galician, although the languages are closely related and contiguous. The languages are thus good candidates for a contrastive and variationist analysis serving these two goals. The semantic class of the predicate, its aspectual properties and the animacy of the subject are some of the most relevant factors that are taken into account to understand the motivations behind the presence (or absence) of the RM. African literatures as world literature The enormous success of writers such as Teju Cole and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie demonstrates that African literatures are now an international phenomenon. But the apparent global legibility of a small number of (mostly Anglophone) writers in the diaspora raises the question of how literary producers from the continent, both past and present, have situated their work in relation to the world and the kinds of material networks to which this corresponds. Dating the Old Norse Poetic Edda: A multifactorial analysis of linguistic features This book offers new dating of the poems of the Old Norse Poetic Edda, perhaps our best sources about the mythology and legends of the Viking Age. This study compares the anonymous Eddic poems to dated skaldic poems with respect to five phenomena that develop diachronically in early Old Norse: the expletive particle of, types of negation, word order, types of relative clause, and metrical criteria. After examining these dating features individually, the three most reliable criteria—the particle of, negation, and relative clause type—are combined into a multifactorial analysis using a Naïve Bayes Classifier. The classifier assigns a date to each Eddic poem, and these proposed dates have interesting implications for our understanding of these texts as sources for the medieval history, mythology, linguistics, and literature of the Germanic peoples. In the cultural context of many western societies, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has come to represent the dark side of longevity in the twenty-first century. While the age-old dream of a long life has become a real possibility for many people, it has simultaneously given rise to new anxieties focused on cultural fears of ‘demented’ old age. An almost inexhaustible variety of media reports, blogs and memoirs testify to today’s obsessive concern with dementia so much so that Alzheimer’s disease has become a cultural idiom for the later stages of the human life course. In expert discourse as well as in personal accounts, Alzheimer’s has produced what might be called a ‘master narrative’ or a Bildungsroman in reverse, recording the progressive un-learning of abilities and knowledges as the illness progresses. This process does not only present a major challenge to patients and caregivers, it also highlights how the illness approaches the limits of representation and narration, questioning at the same time traditional views of selfhood and human development.
While Alzheimer’s affects people indiscriminately as regarding background and social status, it is also a deeply gendered affliction. Gender difference is thus an important factor in the medical and sociological research on Alzheimer’s disease, in which the statistics which pronounce women as more at risk due to difference in longevity are set against the gender imbalance of care. Whereas older women have been more in the focus of Age Studies, because of the even more punitive cultural constructions of female old age, male caregiving for spouses with Alzheimer’s disease still has to be explored in its cultural repercussions. Therefore, the focus chosen in this volume on the specifics of dementia as a disease of ageing masculinity aims at an analysis of the gender difference in care as well as specific aspects of male identity construction in the context of mental illness from the perspective of cultural gerontology. It thus addresses a blank spot in previous research.
Bringing together insights from Masculinity Studies and Age Studies for the first time, this volume focuses on the gendered and relational perspectives in cultural representations of Alzheimer’s disease. The essays intend to initiate a new and more complex approach which looks at dementia as a disease affecting more than one person, invoking and challenging traditional as well as unconventional views of ageing masculinities. Combining a comparative and interdisciplinary approach with a gendered perspective, the essays in this volume engage with Alzheimer’s as a disease of ageing masculinities, drawing on representations of the disease in poetry and film, memoir, ethnographic and fictional narrative.
Beyond Narrative: Exploring Narrative Liminality and Its Cultural Work
This book calls for an investigation of the ›borderlands of narrativity‹ — the complex and culturally productive area where the symbolic form of narrative meets other symbolic logics, such as data(base), play, spectacle, or ritual. It opens up a conversation about the ›beyond‹ of narrative, about the myriad constellations in which narrativity interlaces with, rubs against, or morphs into the principles of other forms. To conceptualize these borderlands, the book introduces the notion of »narrative liminality,« which the 16 articles utilize to engage literature, popular culture, digital technology, historical artifacts, and other kinds of texts from a time span of close to 200 years.

La rivista altrelettere, fondata nel 2012 presso la Cattedra di Letteratura Italiana dell’Università di Zurigo, pubblica articoli relativi alla scrittura delle e sulle donne nell’ambito della letteratura italiana, senza limitazioni cronologiche e nelle principali lingue europee. Gli articoli sono raggruppati per secoli, autori, temi e genere, forniti di un identificativo digitale D.O.I. ed elencati anche in ordine di pubblicazione.
Il titolo di questa rivista, tutto di seguito e minuscolo, vorrebbe, in sintesi, fungere anche da presentazione della nostra linea editoriale: minuscolo, per affermare, antifrasticamente, una presenza maiuscola obliterata e, con essa, la necessità di decostruire e rileggere il canone della letteratura italiana dalla parte delle donne; tutto di seguito perché le scritture di donna, che costituiranno il cuore delle riflessioni ospitate in questa sede, non sono un corpo estraneo all’operazione letteraria quale ce la presenta la tradizione, e perché, anzi, queste ‚altre‘ protagoniste si collocano in rapporto di contiguità (critica e vivace) con ciò da cui – a seconda dei tempi e delle attitudini – sono state tenute lontane, hanno preso le distanze o tratto ispirazione.
In tal senso, creare una rivista in cui dare spazio alla scrittura delle e sulle donne, come soggetti e come oggetti della rappresentazione letteraria, non significa né proporre il separatismo ideologico come pratica esegetica, né arrestarsi al pure fondamentale percorso di (ri)costruzione di una genealogia femminile, quanto piuttosto, in una prospettiva teorica aperta agli studi di genere in tutte le loro declinazioni, costituire un luogo di riflessione sulla molteplicità delle prospettive, delle rappresentazioni, delle pratiche socio-culturali e stilistico-formali di cui si costituisce la letteratura nel suo insieme. Il punto – per dirla un po‘ con, ma anche un po‘ contro, Judith Butler – non è di restare marginali, ma di rendere visibile un posizionamento, uno sguardo sul mondo, un impegno politico. Facendo tesoro dell’esperienza di coloro che, negli anni, sono intervenute metodologicamente proponendo aggiunte, re-visioni e restituzioni con cui affinare la „cassetta degli attrezzi“ degli studi sulle scritture delle donne, intendiamo riportare l’attenzione critica su una varietà di pratiche scrittorie la cui ricchezza, messa a fuoco, si delinei come tale: con la forza di un contributo indispensabile alla vitalità, alla varietà, alla creatività e alla bellezza della letteratura italiana.
apropos [Perspektiven auf die Romania] ist ein Open-Access-Journal, welches die verschiedensten Facetten der Romania aus einer fachübergreifenden, Disziplinen vereinenden und kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive beleuchten will: Neben klassischen Bereichen wie Sprache, Literatur, Kultur berichtet die Zeitschrift in sowohl redaktionell als auch medial innovativen Beiträgen über Geschichte, Gesellschaft, Ideen, (kontemporäre/darstellende) Kunst sowie politisches Geschehen. Damit wird angestrebt, die traditionellen Teildisziplinen der Romanistik in einer gesamtphilologischen Perspektive zusammenzuführen. Zugleich soll diese jedoch im Sinne einer Kulturwissenschaft erweitert und weitere (Nachbar‑, Inter-)Disziplinen einbezogen werden – beispielsweise Area Studies, Bild‑, Medien- und Theaterwissenschaft, Gender und Queer Studien, Landeswissenschaft, Geschichtswissenschaft, Philosophie, Politikwissenschaft.
Geschichte
Die Idee, ein Open-Access-Journal zu gründen, entstand im Nachgang zum 31. Forum Junge Romanistik, der größten Nachwuchstagung in der deutschsprachigen Romanistik, die 2015 an der Universität Rostock stattfand. In diesem Geiste will die Zeitschrift über die romanistischen Teildisziplinen hinweg ein Forum darstellen, das Raum für Reflexion und Austausch zwischen jungen sowie etablierten Forscher*innen, sowohl von inner- als auch von außerhalb der Romanistik, und der interessierten Öffentlichkeit zu verschiedenen aktuellen Themen der Romania bietet.
Formate
Diesen Raum füllen neben traditionellen und zum Teil peer-reviewten Formaten (Dossier, Einzelaufsatz, Rezension) auch freiere Formate (Essay, Interview, Werkstattberichte, Mentoring für studentische Beiträge, Übersetzungen aktueller und ‚übersehener’ Texte aus der Romania, Dokumentation von kontemporärer Kunst aus der Romania). Dabei soll die mediale Bandbreite des Online-Formats ausgenutzt werden: Reine Textbeiträge wie auch Audio- und/oder audiovisuelle Beiträge (z. B. Aufführungsmitschnitte, Interviews, Kurzfilme, Bilder) finden ihren Platz.
Publikationssprachen
Mehrsprachigkeit ist in der Romanistik selbstverständlich, aber vor allem im interdisziplinären Dialog, wie apropos [Perspektiven auf die Romania] ihn anstrebt, eine wichtige Voraussetzung. apropos [Perspektiven auf die Romania] möchte die sprachliche Vielfalt nicht als babelsche Sprachverwirrung verstehen, sondern selbige als Bereicherung innerhalb der Romanistik, aber auch in ihren Inter- sowie Transdisziplinen fördern.
Ist die Romanistik als komparatistische i.w.S. Kulturwissenschaft zwar aus historischer Perspektive eher in der germanophonen Wissenschaftswelt verortet und wurde und wird daher häufig auch auf Deutsch publiziert, so soll jedoch dank der Mehrsprachigkeit von apropos [Perspektiven auf die Romania] – und dies auch innerhalb einer Ausgabe – die Romania nicht nur sprachlich abgebildet werden, sondern den Autor*innen aus der Romania auch die Möglichkeit eingeräumt werden, in ihrer jeweiligen ‘Muttersprache’ zu (inter-)nationalen Themenkomplexen zu Wort zu kommen. Wir begrüßen es daher, auch Dossier- und Artikelvorschläge aus der Romania auf ‘romanisch’ (französisch, italienisch, spanisch, rumänisch, portugiesisch, … ) zu erhalten und zu veröffentlichen. Die Form der Online-Veröffentlichung bietet zudem Raum, ausgewählte Artikel auch zu übersetzen und zwei- oder mehrsprachig erscheinen zu lassen.

EstudiosCulturalesHispánicos es una revista internacional e interdisciplinaria editada por el Centro de Estudios Hispánicos / Forschungszentrum Spanien de la Universidad de Ratisbona con el objetivo de contribuir a la investigación sobre la cultura española desde el enfoque de los estudios culturales y servir, asimismo, como foro para la discusión sobre los estudios culturales en el mundo hispánico.
EstudiosCulturalesHispánicos pretende promover el debate sobre la cultura en un sentido más amplio, lo que implica orientar enfoques propiamente disciplinarios (de la sociología, política, historia, literatura, lingüística, las ciencias de los medios etc.) hacia reflexiones interconectadas entre sí y encaminadas hacia una mejor comprensión de los fenómenos y procesos culturales en España y el mundo hispánico.
El centro de interés de la revista es la cultura española contemporánea, así como sus relaciones con América Latina y Europa. Tanto este enfoque temático como la perspectiva metodológica de los estudios culturales (cultural studies, études culturelles / histoire culturelle, Kulturwissenschaft) se entienden como conceptos y nociones no claramente delimitados, sino abiertos.
EstudiosCulturalesHispánicos aparece en versión digital de acceso libre y gratuito. Los artículos son sometidos a una evaluación a cargo de expertos externos (peer-review). Los artículos y demás contribuciones se publican preferentemente en lengua española.

Die Vision: „Linking Reference Works of the Jewish culture and history“:
Scholarly reference works like encyclopediae, glossars, or catalogs function as guides to a scholarly domain and as anchor points and manifestations of scholarly work. On the web of Linked Data, they can take on a key function to interlink resources related to the described concepts.
JudaicaLink provides support to publish and interlink existing reference works of the Jewish culture and history as Linked Data.
For each entity described in such works, a Unique Resource Identifier (URI) is created that can be used to link and thereby identify mentions of this entity in metadata and texts. The process of this identification and linking is refered to as contextualisation.
Noch ist JudaicaLink nur für „Professionals“ wie Bibliotheken und Forschungsinstitute nutzbar; Services für „Endanwender“ sind in Vorbereitung.

54books entstand als Blog und wuchs zu einem Magazin. Gestartet von Tilman Winterling, der eigentlich nur eine Möglichkeit suchte, über seine Leseerfahrungen zu schreiben, wird 54books inzwischen von einem Team bespielt. Von Rezensionen über Debattenbeiträge und Interviews wird hier vielen Themen Raum gegeben, die im Feuilleton keinen Platz mehr finden.
Auf dem Blog „Horatio-Bücher“ soll sich alles um Bücher und Literatur drehen. Rezensionen, Buchempfehlungen und Themen zur Literatur sind hier zu finden.
Seit meiner Jugend lebe ich mit Büchern und lese wann immer ich die Zeit dafür erübrigen kann. Bücher sind für mich ein Erlebnis für die Sinne. Gestaltung, Haptik, der Geruch des Papiers, ein Buch kann ein Gesamtkunstwerk sein. Wenn dann auch noch der Inhalt stimmt, muss darüber berichtet werden.
Ganz bewusst ist dieser Blog nicht auf bestimmte Genres beschränkt. So vielfältig wie meine literarischen Interessen sollen auch die Bücher sein, die hier vorgestellt werden.
Ich lese zu meinem eigenen privaten Vergnügen und wähle nur Bücher als Lektüre aus, von denen ich auch glaube, dass sie mir gefallen werden. Die hier auf dem Blog vorgestellte Auswahl ist daher sehr subjektiv.
Wegen dieser sorgfältigen Vorauswahl kommt es auch nur selten vor, dass ein Buch hier auf dem Blog völlig durchfällt. In jedem Fall kann ich aber versichern, dass ich keinerlei Hemmungen habe, die Dinge klar beim Namen zu nennen.
Meine Beiträge sehe ich nicht als klassische Rezensionen, sondern als sehr persönliche „Buchvorstellungen“ bzw. in den meisten Fällen „Buchempfehlungen“, in denen ich meine Eindrücke und Erlebnisse rund um meine Lektüre wiedergeben möchte.
Anregungen für neue Bücher und Themen sammle ich häufig in den sozialen Netzwerken und auch den vielen wunderbaren Blogs, die online zu finden sind und die ich regelmäßig mit großer Freude besuche. Eine kleine Auswahl dieser Blogs ist unter der Rubrik Netzreise zu finden.
Ich genieße es zudem sehr, mich auf Twitter über Literatur auszutauschen. Neuigkeiten aus den Literaturblogs, dem Literaturbetrieb sowie viele Fotos und „Nerdsachen“, sind täglich auf meinem sehr aktiven Twitter–Account anzutreffen. Wer mir dort folgt, verpasst natürlich auch keine meiner Buchvorstellungen.
Mit ihrem Programmbetrieb, dem Center for Literature (CfL), bespielt die Annette von Droste zu Hülshoff-Stiftung seit 2018 Burg Hülshoff, Geburtsort der Dichterin, und das Rüschhaus, ihre spätere Wohn- und Arbeitsstätte. Durch diese Arbeit transformieren sich Burg und Landhaus zu offenen Foren. Kunst wird hier Anstoß für lebendige Debatten.

Für uns ist Literatur ein Fest, Anlass für Begegnung und im besten Fall Auslöser leidenschaftlicher und anhaltender Gespräche. Wir gehen gemeinsam auf die Suche nach Worten für den Wandel und lernen zusammen, wie Worte uns wandeln.
Im Programm des CfL verbinden sich Veranstaltungen, Residenzen, Forschung, partizipative Programme sowie drei Museen: Burg Hülshoff, Haus Rüschhaus und Droste-Landschaft : Lyrikweg, ein Museum in der Landschaft. Hinzu kommt unsere Digitale Burg als Ort der Teilhabe im Internet. Wir erinnern nicht nur als einzige Institution bundesweit in diesem Umfang an das Werk einer Schriftstellerin, sondern nehmen auch ihr Leben und ihre Zeit als Anlass, um das Jetzt und das Morgen zu befragen.
Do speakers’ identity constructions influence the emergence of new varieties of a language? This question is at the heart of a debate about how the process of the emergence of postcolonial varieties of English can best be modeled. This volume contributes to the debate by linking it to models and theories proposed by anthropological linguists, sociolinguists and discourse linguists who view identity as a social and cultural phenomenon that is produced through linguistic and other social practices. Language is seen as essential for identity constructions because speakers use linguistic forms that index social ‘personae’ as well as specific social practices and values to convey an image of self to other speakers.
Based on the theory of enregisterment that models the cultural and discursive process of the creation of indexical links between linguistic forms and social values, the argument is made that any model of the emergence of new varieties needs to differentiate carefully between a structural level and a discursive level. What emerges on the discursive level as a result of processes of enregisterment is a ‘discursive variety’. The volume illustrates how the emergence of a discursive variety can be systematically studied in a historical context by focusing on the enregisterment of American English as it can be observed in nineteenth-century U.S. newspapers. Using a discourse-linguistic methodological framework and two large databases containing close to 78 million newspaper articles, the study reveals a complex pattern of indexical links between the phonological forms /h/-dropping and ‑insertion, yod-dropping, a lengthened and backened bath vowel, non-rhoticity, a realization of prevocalic /r/ as a labiodental approximant as well as the lexical items baggage and pants on the one hand and social values centering around nationality, authenticity and non-specificity on the other hand. Qualitative analyses uncover the social personae associated with the linguistic forms (e.g. the American cowboy, the African American mammy and the ‘Anglo-maniac’ American dude), while quantitative analyses trace the development over time and show that the enregisterment processes were widespread and not restricted to a particular region.
Where does today’s English language come from? This book takes its readers on a journey back in time, from present-day varieties to the Old English of Beowulf and beyond. Written for students with little or no background in linguistics, and reflecting the latest scholarship, it showcases the variation and change present throughout the history of English, and includes numerous exercises and sample texts for every period.
The reverse-chronological approach taken by this book sets it apart from all existing textbooks of the last fifty years. Innovative features also include its focus on variation, multilingualism and language contact, its use of texts from outside the literary canon, and its inclusion of case studies from syntax, sociophonetics and historical pragmatics.

The podcast ‚Across the Caucasus‘ is a monthly series curated and produced by members of the Institute for Caucasus Studies in Jena, Germany. The podcast aims to disseminate insights on the North and South Caucasus and to provide young researchers a platform to present and discuss their research projects. Furthermore, the podcast wants to digitalize knowledge on the Caucasus. Topics which are represented are politics, social dynamics, history, linguistic and cultural forms.

Adrian Daub’s The Dynastic Imagination offers an unexpected account of modern German intellectual history through frameworks of family and kinship. Modernity aimed to brush off dynastic, hierarchical authority and to make society anew through the mechanisms of marriage, siblinghood, and love. It was, in other words, centered on the nuclear family. But as Daub shows, the dynastic imagination persisted, in time emerging as a critical stance by which the nuclear family’s conservatism and temporal limits could be exposed. Focusing on the complex interaction between dynasties and national identity-formation in Germany, Daub shows how a lingering preoccupation with dynastic modes of explanation, legitimation, and organization suffused German literature and culture.
