Die vor­liegende Dis­ser­ta­tion, die in der Gram­matikalisierungs­forschung ange­siedelt ist, wid­met sich der Entste­hung der vier desub­stan­tivis­chen Prä­po­si­tio­nen trotz, dank, kraft und laut. Im Zen­trum dieser empirischen und haupt­säch­lich qual­i­ta­tiv aus­gerichteten Arbeit ste­ht sowohl die Ermit­tlung von Gemein­samkeit­en und Unter­schieden bezüglich der Gram­matikalisierungsp­fade dieser Prä­po­si­tio­nen als auch die Erschließung der Prozesse, die im Laufe der Gram­matikalisierung auf den einzel­nen sprach­lichen Ebe­nen stat­tfind­en. Die Entste­hungs­geschicht­en der vier Prä­po­si­tio­nen wer­den unter Ver­wen­dung sprach­his­torisch­er Kor­po­ra vom Althochdeutschen bis in die heutige Zeit nachgeze­ich­net. Die Analyse ist method­isch durch zwei Mod­elle der Kon­tex­tex­ten­sion geprägt, die darauf abzie­len, mit Hil­fe ver­schieden­er Kon­text­typen, in denen Neuerun­gen auf den Ebe­nen der Seman­tik, der Prag­matik und der Struk­tur stat­tfind­en, die Stufen eines Gram­matikalisierungsp­fades zu ermit­teln.

The syntax of functional left peripheries: Clause typing in West Germanic and beyond

This book pro­vides a nov­el analy­sis for the syn­tax of the clausal left periph­ery, focus­ing on var­i­ous finite clause types and espe­cial­ly on embed­ded claus­es. It inves­ti­gates how the appear­ance of mul­ti­ple pro­jec­tions inter­acts with econ­o­my prin­ci­ples and with the need for mark­ing syn­tac­tic infor­ma­tion overt­ly. In par­tic­u­lar, the pro­posed account shows that a flex­i­ble approach assum­ing only a min­i­mal num­ber of pro­jec­tions is alto­geth­er favourable to car­to­graph­ic approach­es. The main focus of the book is on West Ger­man­ic, in par­tic­u­lar on Eng­lish and Ger­man, yet oth­er Ger­man­ic and non-Ger­man­ic lan­guages are also dis­cussed for com­par­a­tive pur­pos­es.

This book is an intro­duc­tion to the syn­tac­tic struc­tures that can be found in the Ger­man­ic lan­guages. The analy­ses are couched in the frame­work of HPSG light, which is a sim­pli­fied ver­sion of HPSG that uses trees to depict analy­ses rather than com­pli­cat­ed attribute val­ue matri­ces.

The book is writ­ten for stu­dents with basic knowl­edge about case, con­stituent tests, and sim­ple phrase struc­ture gram­mars (advanced BA or MA lev­el) and for researchers with an inter­est in the Ger­man­ic lan­guages and/or an inter­est in Head-Dri­ven Phrase Struc­ture Gram­mar/Sign-Based Con­struc­tion Gram­mar with­out hav­ing the time to deal with all the details of these the­o­ries.
